What is “The Ghan”?

Operated by Great Southern Rail, the Ghan is an iconic transcontinental train that traverses through the heart of Australia, connecting Adelaide to the tropical epicentre of the north - Darwin. This epic railway adventure spans 2,979 kilometres, taking passengers on a captivating voyage through ever-changing scenery, from the rugged Red Centre to the lush landscapes of the Top End of Aus. It’s an experience of a lifetime and for the right Incentive trip, would be a unique event opportunity that Jen our Managing Director got to experience firsthand.

It isn't just a mode of transportation, it's a luxurious experience in itself! As an events company seeking unique and memorable excursions, the Ghan offers an unparalleled opportunity for a very bespoke event and once in a lifetime activities along the way.

The Ghan train on tracks

Let’s set the mood. Imagine hosting a corporate retreat or team-building event against the backdrop of the breathtaking Australian Outback. With carefully curated onboard services, including fine dining, top-notch accommodation packages, and engaging activities, the Ghan becomes a travelling venue for a smaller group, providing a distinctive setting for small events that would rival the Orient Express. The train's cabins are intimate but very comfortable, and the panoramic windows and observation decks create an atmosphere of luxury, ensuring that every moment of the journey is as remarkable as the destinations it stops at.

 Highlights on board:

Jen's favourites on board included a sunrise breakfast at Marla, which in her exact words was “one of the most beautiful sunrises I have ever witnessed”. An absolute must do for any traveller onboard the Ghan.

Another highlight was the Nitmiluk Gorge in Katherine - while visiting here, it was wonderful to learn about the significance of “Nitmiluk” to the Indigenous Jawoyn people, listening to the many stories that celebrate their spiritual connection to the gorge. This cultural experience was just so special - Jen says “There is always so much to explore and experience if you just scratch the surface and listen to the local people a bit more.”

For those seeking an unforgettable event that seamlessly blends easy-going adventure and exploration, the Ghan train trip is an experience like no other. The train's meticulously planned itineraries allow groups to explore iconic landmarks, such as Uluru and Katherine Gorge, while indulging in gourmet cuisine and enjoying world-class service.

Eventing on The Ghan:

Planning is easy but you are times are limited so making sure the group size is correct for such a trip is essential. There is a lot of downtime between stops so your target group would be relaxers and not active doers as when travelling you do have time to spare. Free time can be spent with entertainment on board such as speakers and networking.

This trip is about the rhythm of the train and watching the red expanse go by. This  is a ‘must do’ and a once in a lifetime trip.

The Ghan is not just a train journey; it's a chance to create lasting memories and forge connections in the heart of Australia's stunning landscapes, making it an ideal canvas for your next extraordinary event.
